According to statistics, about 40% of the global macro base stations use microwave return, mainly using traditional microwave technology (6-42ghz frequency band), with an average return capacity between 50Mbps and 500mbps, which can not meet the demand of base station return capacity in 5g era.

If 40% of the world's Acer stations adopt optical fiber retransmission transformation, the cost is unimaginable. Therefore, microwave communication with higher transmission capacity is needed in 5g era.

Therefore, E-band microwave stepped on the stage of history.

E-band microwave refers to the microwave band whose frequency is around 80 GHz. The actual allocated frequency band is 71-76 GHz and 81-86 GHz, and the total usable bandwidth is up to 10 GHz.

The bandwidth of traditional microwave channel ranges from 3.5 MHz to 112 MHz, and the channel bandwidth of E-band can be as high as 1000MHz to 2000MHz. With the adoption of high-order modulation, multi band aggregation and MIMO technology, it can meet the return requirements of base station in 5g era of 10-20gbps.

The 10-20gbps microwave return capacity can meet the early 5g deployment and some base stations in rural areas. However, with the development of 5g, the traffic demand is increasing, and the industry calls for higher microwave return capacity.

At the end of 2018, Ericsson and Deutsche Telekom achieved a breakthrough of 40Gbps wireless return rate in the 2000MHz channel bandwidth based on the commercial equipment mini-link 6352, which is four times faster than the existing system.

According to the official website of Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson mini-link 6352 equipment is still used this time, but the introduction of 8x8 line of sight MIMO, cross polarization interference cancellation and other technologies has realized the simultaneous transmission of 8-channel data stream on the 2.5GHz channel bandwidth, thus achieving a transmission rate breakthrough of 100gbps.

Deutsche Telekom said that during the test period in mid April, the transmission rate measurement value was always higher than 100gbps, the transmission reliability was always higher than 99.995%, and the peak speed could reach 140gbps.

Alex jinsung Choi, senior vice president of technology innovation at Deutsche Telekom, said that 5g era needs more advanced backhaul solutions to support high data throughput and improve customer experience. This test milestone confirmed the feasibility of microwave return to support 5g high-capacity and high-performance transmission.
